As of today, MetaScope is called Parergon. Version 1.7.0 is on the Mac App Store now, and when it installs, the app on your Mac takes the new name.
That is the whole change. It is the same app, and it does the same work. Your subscription, libraries, templates, custom fields, vocabularies and settings are exactly where you left them, and there is nothing you need to do.
Why “Parergon”
Parergon (πάρεργον) is ancient Greek for “that which is beside the work”: not the image itself, but what accompanies it.
That is a fair description of metadata. The capture date, the caption, the keywords, the copyright line and the location are not the photograph, but they decide whether anyone can find it, credit it or trust it years from now. The app has always been about that layer. Now its name says so.
A release that only changes the name
Version 1.7.0 adds no new features, on purpose. Changing a name touches almost every screen, so we kept everything else still. If something does not behave the way it did yesterday, the rename is the only place to look, and that makes it quick to find and fix.
What you will notice:
- The new name everywhere. The app, its menus and windows, Settings, in-app Help and the license agreement say Parergon. The subscription is now called Parergon Pro, and what it includes is unchanged.
- Exports name Parergon. Exported files and reports name Parergon as the app that made them.
- New links. Support, privacy and license links in the app now open parergon.io.
- Your Photos import album. New users’ imports go to an album called “Parergon Imports”. If your library already has a “MetaScope Imports” album, imports keep going there, and the app never makes a second one.
- Creator & Copyright Stamp. The built-in template now writes Software = Parergon. If you changed that value yourself, your version is kept.
What stays the same
- Your subscription
- Your libraries, templates, custom fields, vocabularies and settings
- The metadata already in your files, including your custom fields, which read back exactly as before
- Photos you have already stamped or imported
- Your folder access and permissions
- The license agreement’s terms. Only the app’s name and its privacy-policy link changed, and you are not asked to accept it again.
The website moves too
parergon.io is the new home for the app: features, task guides, support, the journal and the full release history. Release notes and posts written before today keep the MetaScope name, because that is the name those versions shipped under.
The Parergon 1.7.0 release notes list every change. Parergon requires macOS 15.4 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon. Get Parergon on the Mac App Store.
